Omoyemi AkereleOmoyemi Akerele (LLM in International Economic Law, 2001-2002) was awarded the 拢1 million Earthshot Prize in 2025 for her pioneering work with Lagos Fashion Week.

The Earthshot Prize was founded by Prince William in 2020 and was designed to incentivize solutions for major environmental challenges by 2030. Every year, it finds, supports and celebrates those who turn bold ideas into solutions for our planet. They search the globe for game-changing examples of climate leadership and innovation, helping them to grow and awarding the very best five solutions each year with 拢1 million each to scale their work.

Founded in 2011, Lagos Fashion Week has grown into Africa鈥檚 largest and most influential fashion platform, championing sustainability, circular design, and community empowerment. Under Omoyemi鈥檚 leadership, it has become a vital cultural force tackling overproduction, promoting local craftsmanship, and redefining global fashion through an African lens.

Lagos Fashion Week is transforming one of the world鈥檚 most wasteful industries by creating a new fashion economy: one rooted in purpose, sustainability and cultural integrity.

When asked about the award Omoyemi shared:

鈥淟agos Fashion Week was founded to build a globally competitive fashion ecosystem from Africa, one that champions creativity, sustainability and economic opportunity for designers and communities. Winning the Earthshot Prize is both an honour and responsibility, a powerful affirmation that African led solutions can drive meaningful climate impact, and it strengthens our commitment to advancing circularity, responsible production, and long term systems change within the fashion industry.鈥
