WLS LLM student raises money to empower women in Nigeria
To celebrate International Women’s Day, LLM student Chidinma Kalu, initiated a fundraising activity to raise funds that will be utilised to empower women in Nigeria through equipping them with digital training and skills. This was in line with the 2023 theme for International Women’s Day, ‘DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’, which highlights the need to equip women and girls with digital skills that will enable them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related fields.
The fundraising activities were held at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV from 8–10 March 2023 and the target was to raise £4100 to train 50 girls in Nigeria with ÌÇÐÄTV Law School providing organisational and financial support towards the event. Along with 10 other student volunteers coming from ÌÇÐÄTV Law School, ÌÇÐÄTV ÌÇÐÄTV School, ÌÇÐÄTV Medical School, the Department of Sociology, Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies, ÌÇÐÄTV Manufacturing Group, plus support from WLS staff, Chidi who is currently studying on our LLM in International Development Law and Human Rights, was able to raise a total of £364.12.
The funds raised will be used by the GirlLEAD Project to train and equip about 5 girls in Nigeria with digital skills. The skills learnt will enable the participants to start and further a career in Information Technology, thus bridging the digital gender divide in the access to digital skills.
Well done to Chidi and all the other staff and students involved.
