Dr Anil Awesti elected Chair of PSA Diversity & Equality Group

Dr Anil Awesti, the Law School’s Widening Participation Officer and Researcher, has been elected as Chair of the Political Studies Association’s Diversity & Equality Group (DEG). He explained the importance of the work of the Group,

.

One of the main tasks of social science is to explain society to itself. To this end, achieving greater social diversity within political studies and the wider social sciences is not just about fair representation but about making social scientists better able to engage in their task through reflecting the diversity of society at large. In this context, the lack of social and economic diversity within the profession is highly concerning. The lack of diversity in the social sciences is not only unsatisfactory from the perspective of equal access and opportunity but the persistence of patterns of inequality and lack of diversity matter when the business of social science is about reflecting on the state of public life and society. I aim to continue the process of understanding the reasons behind the poor representation of structurally disadvantaged groups (such as those located around class, gender, race, ethnicity and disability) within the social sciences and establish initiatives to increase diversity.”

More information about the Group can be found and Anil can be contacted at A.K.Awesti@warwick.ac.uk
