Applied Microeconomics

The Applied Microeconomics research group unites researchers working on a broad array of topics within such areas as labour economics, economics of education, health economics, family economics, urban economics, environmental economics, and the economics of science and innovation. The group operates in close collaboration with the CAGE Research Centre.

The group participates in the CAGE seminar on Applied Economics, which runs weekly on Tuesdays at 2:15pm. Students and faculty members of the group present their ongoing work in two brown bag seminars, held weekly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1pm. Students, in collaboration with faculty members, also organise a bi-weekly reading group in applied econometrics on Thursdays at 1pm. The group organises numerous events throughout the year, including the Research Away Day and several thematic workshops.

If oversubscribe, the event will be live-streamed on the Channel About the speaker: Sam McLoughlin works at an EdTech company looking to give young people (aged 11-18) a level playing field to demonstrate their skills and talent. Since graduating in Economics from University of Newcastle in 2007, Sam has worked in education as Teacher, Careers Leader and other roles in Premier League football clubs and stat secondary schools. He also worked on an Enterprise education pilot project in Uganda which won an Enterprising Britain Award and has now been rolled out across a number of African and Asian countries. Sam has been interested in working and improving the quality of education of UK children in deprived areas. He was part of a senior leadership team that founded 鈥� 鈥� using the Studio School Model in a highly deprived ward in the North East. He is also school governor and Director at two community/education organisations and ). Sam's focus has always been on young people becoming the best version of themselves, we he will share his experience with us. We hope this helps us to inform our policies on widening participation.
