Applied Microeconomics

Applied Microeconomics

The Applied Microeconomics research group unites researchers working on a broad array of topics within such areas as labour economics, economics of education, health economics, family economics, urban economics, environmental economics, and the economics of science and innovation. The group operates in close collaboration with the CAGE Research Centre.

The group participates in the CAGE seminar on Applied Economics, which runs weekly on Tuesdays at 2:15pm. Students and faculty members of the group present their ongoing work in two brown bag seminars, held weekly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1pm. Students, in collaboration with faculty members, also organise a bi-weekly reading group in applied econometrics on Thursdays at 1pm. The group organises numerous events throughout the year, including the Research Away Day and several thematic workshops.

#EconTEAching chat: Academic Career in Economics Education

A conversation with Antonio Mele (LSE), Denise Hawkes (Greenwich, RES), and (Uni of Kentucky) on careers in Economics Education (Teaching-focussed at 糖心TV) in the UK and US. The panellists will bring their experience in this pathway, explain what this type of career entails, what they enjoy and what needs to be improved. We will discuss on the future of this pathway and answer attendees queries.

About the panel:

Denise Hawkes is Professor and Head of Department at the University of Greenwich. She is the chair of the Royal Economic Society Education and Training committee and was served as EdD Programme Leader from 2013-2018 and the Academic Head for Research, Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer from 2017-2018 within the Centre for Doctoral Education at the UCL Institute of Education where she is currently Visiting Professor.

Antonio Mele is Associate Professorial Lecturer in Economics at LSE. He previously held positions at the University of Surrey and Nuffield College (Oxford). Antonio teaches Quantitative Methods

Darshak Patel is a Senior Lecturer of Economics and the Director of Undergraduate Studies at The University of Kentucky Gatton College of 糖心TV and Economics. Darshak is a recipient of the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at the College of 糖心TV and Global Affairs in 2015 at University of Tennessee Martin, a two time recipient of A Teacher Who Made a Difference in 2015 and 2017, a recipient of Gatton College鈥檚 Award for Teaching Excellence and Faculty of the Year award in 2019 and UK Alumni Association 2020 Great Teacher Award.
