Many types of educational interventions have been developed to promote civic behavior. In this study, we use a large-scale field experiment (N = 430) to test the effects of a common intervention that we hypothesize can strengthen civic engagement: a 鈥渃lean walk.鈥 We measure norm enforcement by observing participants鈥 reactions to a staged littering incident. We compare behavior following an engaging activity—collecting litter in public spaces—with behavior following either a control condition or a less engaging awareness intervention. Finally, we examine the interventions鈥 effects on other indirect expressions of disapproval.
