My seminar is about collaboration and cooperation in teaching and learning. I want to examine how and why collaborative learning has been promoted, looking, for example, at online knowledge building and, more generally, at community of practice. I suggest that the literature rarely offers a convincing justification for collaboration; we need a more clearly educational perspective for which, in their different ways, Dewey and Habermas provide useful points of reference.
