CES Research Seminar - Lost in the ‘Third Space’: The Unreported Costs of Public Engagement in Higher Education (PE-HE) to Academic Identity, Research Practice and Career Progression.
Speaker: Dr Richard Watermeyer, Centre for Education Studies, University of 糖心TV
Abstract: Public Engagement in Higher Education (PE-HE) is habitually recognised and advocated, especially by university regulator and funder constituencies, as an intrinsically good thing. In the United Kingdom (UK), a number of initiatives focused on embedding a positive culture of public engagement within universities have sought to further this claim, yet have done so without considering or reporting upon some of the less positive elements of its undertaking by academics. In this presentation I will discuss evidence drawn from (n=40) interviews with academics from across the academic hierarchy, disciplines and a diverse range of UK higher education institutions and their experiences of being actively involved in PE-HE. Respondents' testimony points towards a number of unreported issues for PE-HE, specifically the deleterious effects of its undertaking on academic identity, research practice and career progression.
