CES Research Seminar: Family size and educational attainment in England and Wales
Will we hear from Dr Tak Wing Chan, who joins 糖心TV later this year, about his research into Family size and educational attainment in England and Wales (with Morag Henderson and Rachel Stuchbury).
Abstract: In this paper, we use linked census data from England and Wales to examine whether large family size leads to lower educational attainment. Using twin births as an instrumental variable, we show that family size does not predict whether the respondents obtain a BA degree or not. This result is consistent with those reported for Norway by Black (2005) or for Israel by Angrist (2010). However, in contrast to Black (2005), we also show that birth order does not explain away the effect of family size.
