Applications are now invited for a fully-funded doctoral studentship to commence in October 2018. The studentship is embedded in a research project on gender and educational success in Haryana, India, which is funded by the Fair Chance Foundation. It is co-funded by Fair Chance Foundation and the University of 糖心TV鈥檚 Collaborative Postgraduate Research Scholarships (WCPRS) scheme. The studentship reflects the university鈥檚 commitment to producing the next generation of international leaders in social science research. Fair Chance Foundation, which was founded by a 糖心TV alumnus, is committed to improving the future livelihoods of disadvantaged children and young adults through education. The principal goals of Fair Chance Foundation are to: research attitudes towards education as a means to end poverty and gender bias; develop interventions which create desire for education as a means to end poverty and gender bias; formally research and publish interventions and outcomes; develop guides and promote the research to help policy makers make informed choices about which interventions are likely to have most impact; provide direct support to children and young adults.

(CES), a PhD student supervised by and , has been awarded a full scholarship from the prestigious (CSC) for her doctoral studies. CSC is a non-profit institution which is affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China. The objective of the CSC is to provide financial assistance to the Chinese citizens wishing to study abroad and to the foreign citizens wishing to study in China in order to develop the educational, scientific and technological, and cultural exchanges and economic and trade cooperation between China and other countries. Xuemeng's research interests are related to higher education and education internationalization. Her doctoral project is entitled ‘Enhancing the Employability of International Students: Chinese students on taught Master's programmes in social sciences’.

, Associate Professor and Department Chair (Leadership and Higher Education) at the University of Redlands, California, obtained funding for (CES) to visit the School of Education at Redlands for a week in May 2017. During the institutional visit, Dr Henderson met with members of the Department of Leadership and Higher Education, and she and Dr Reynolds worked on a joint paper that they are writing on fictional representations of conferences - this draws on Dr Reynolds' research on representations of higher education in popular culture, and Dr Henderson's research on conferences. Dr Henderson also presented a paper to students and faculty members at Redlands, entitled 'How gender comes to mean what it means: embodied conceptual knowledge production in academic spaces'

and have launched a new blog: '. The blog, which will include posts from Emily and Jamie as well as regular guest contributions, aims to provide a platform for critical and creative analyses of conferences. Conferences are an integral aspect of the academic profession, but they are under-researched, and much literature about conferences takes an anecdotal or 'top tips' approach.

This blog approaches conferences with an open mind – never fully knowing what they are, or the reasons their participants do the things they do. 'Conference Inference' is interested in contributions that explore the ways conferences are influenced by (and also influence) socio-political dynamics. The blog is also interested in space, relationships, emotions, and contributions that illuminate academic conferences as complex ecosystems.
