DEAR Centre and HEHD Centre Collaboration Webinar Series

The DEAR centre and the Higher Education and Human Development (HEHD) centre at the University of Free State in South Africa (UFS) jointly hosted the first seminar in the collaboration series on 18 May 2026. These seminars are specifically for doctoral students and post-doctoral members of the two centres to hear each other's work. Also, a platform for networking and possible members' collaborations.

We had four presentations as follows:

  • 1st Presentation: Power Dynamics in Kenyan Law Schools by Dr Christine Olando (Post-doctoral member-DEAR).
  • 2nd Presentation: A Well-being Exploration of International Students at the University of the Free State by Monthusi Magosi (Doctoral student member-HEHD).
  • 3rd Presentation: Who Becomes a Viable Doctoral Subject? International Doctoral Applicants and the Digital Production of Admissibility by Evan Zheng (Doctoral student member- DEAR).
  • 4th Presentation: Digital Disconnects and Capability Constraints: Institutional Communication Gaps in NSFAS Social Media Engagement by Pikolomzi Qaba (Doctoral student member-HEHD).

It was fantastic to have so many colleagues from both centres in attendance. The seminar was productive and marked the beginning of many future events and potential individual collaborations across different research areas.

The next seminar is expected to be held in June 2026.
