Picturing education agent–student relationships in China: an exploratory study
We are very happy to share that the article, 'Picturing education agent–student relationships in China: an exploratory study,' has been published in Globalisation, Societies and Education. The article has been authored by DEAR Centre phd student Evan Zheng with support from her supervisors and co-authors, Dr James Burford and Prof. Emily Henderson.
Having previously worked as an education agent/admissions consultant in China, Evan was genuinely surprised to discover how many everyday practices in the industry have already been critically discussed and debated within academic literature. This experience pushed Evan to reflect more carefully on what often feels “routine” in practice.
In this article, developed from Evan's MA thesis, aims to offer a more nuanced picture of who education agents are, what can happen in their interactions with students and how such relational dynamics influence mobility preparation. Preparing for degree mobility is rarely a straightforward process—it is complex, relational, and carries significant meaning for international students navigating their futures.
It is hoped this work contributes, in a small way, to ongoing conversations about international student mobility and the roles of different actors within it.
