The is an online international community of practice to advance expertise in diary method. The Community is , and it is nested under the umbrella of the .

The Diary method Community recently hosted their on 30th April 2026. Facilitated by DEAR Centre Doctoral Group member Fatima Alhaj Hasan, from Education Studies (SELCS) at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV, UK, the session drew on Fatima’s PhD research which explore workplace conflict among academics in Syrian higher education institutions. The event recording (presentation only) can be accessed at

Fatima discussed the design and implementation of her diary study, where she used semi-structured written diaries alongside interviews in a context shaped by ethical and practical constraints. Focus was placed on how the diary method complements interviews in relation to its unique potential to enable capturing the everyday micro-interactions and the development of conflict over time.

The session reflected on methodological challenges such as participant engagement and attrition in light of the contextual circumstances of the study, with discussion about utilising the diary method in complex or sensitive research contexts and topics.

The event was interactive with a fascinating discussion mid-way in the event about how the event attendees would have designed the study, given the context and circumstances of the study. There was also time for Q&A at the end, and the discussion could have extended way beyond the allotted time for the event. The Community Co-convenors would like to thank Fatima for this engaging session!

Event attendance summary: 24 attendees, including 12 doctoral students, 10 early/mid-career academics/researchers, 2 senior academics, based in 7 countries – Cameroon (1), Chile (1), India (4), Pakistan (1), South Africa (1), Turkey (10), UK (14) (+1 country unknown), from 14 universities/organisations.
