WAHEI team members present at the National Law University Odisha (NLUO)
Recently, WAHEI Co-Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator Prof Ann StewartLink opens in a new window attended the one-day international seminar on “Inclusive Higher Education as a Human Right: Addressing Gender, Age, and Intersectional Inequalities in Indian Universities”, which took place on 31 January 2026 at the National Law University Odisha (), in Cuttack, India.
Based at NLUO, this event was hosted by the Centre for Women & Law (CWL) which is a research centre established to platform the study of structural, societal, legal and regulatory issues associated with gender from a multi-disciplinary perspective.
Invited by Dr. Priyanka Anand, Associate Professor of Law & Director of the Centre for Women & Law, Dr Sabharwal and Prof Stewart launched the online special address session with a presentation of their reflections on inclusive higher education, which included insights from the WAHEI project and their work on the professional development module recently piloted with Indian higher education faculty members.
In their presentation Ann and Nidhi reflected on way in which a human rights approach, in particular the provisions contained within the Right to Higher Education, can been used to address intersectional inequalities within the provision of Higher Education. This approach supports international and national inclusive, social justice based, HE policy developments. Ann focused on the UK context where despite the development of policies to widen participation, students from disadvantaged groups and localities are still underrepresented within HE particularly within 'elite'/high tariff institutions. Nidhi focused on the Indian context. She showed how the WAHEI project was developing a deeper understanding of the contribution that faculty members and their institutions located in and serving rural and semi urban areas can make to increasing access.
