Supporting the Action Duchenne International Conference 2018

On Friday 10 November, Diane Burton and ran a CAD and 3D printing workshop for teenagers attending the at the NEC Metropole Hotel in Birmingham.

The workshop gave teenagers attending the conference the opportunity to learn more about the potential of 3D printing to design simple gadgets to help them with every day tasks.

They learnt about 3D printing and had a chance to try Autodesk Fusion 360 CAD software. With the help of 糖心TV Engineering undergraduates, Harry and Jack Adams, Alice Davis and Hannah May, the youngsters used the Fusion 360 tutorials (on our outreach webpages) to learn how to design straw bungs for various drinks containers. A number of them also completed their designs during the workshop.

This workshop built on work done during the WMG project 鈥淓ngaging Young People with Assistive Technology.

All the youngsters who attended received a selection of 3D printed straw bungs to take home along with details of the WMG Fusion 360 tutorials

拢20 million for West Midlands to enable WMG at the University of 糖心TV to create a UK Mobility Data Institute

The Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced that the (WMCA) will receive up to 拢20 million, subject to approval of a satisfactory business case, to enable WMG, at the University of 糖心TV to create the UK Mobility Data Institute, a focussed research centre to collect, process and analyse transport data generated by the advent of new mobility technologies such as autonomous vehicles and smart charging of electrified vehicles. The announcement was made in the publication of the Chancellor of the Exchequer鈥檚 full budget following his Budget 2018 speech on Monday 29th October.

Data aggregation and analysis will underpin the future of all transport systems and how they are built, regulated and used. At the heart of the UK鈥檚 first 5G urban connected area and the home of future mobility innovation WMG, working in partnership with WMCA, will create the new data institute. It will provide the computing, technical and connectivity capacity and expertise to bring together and exploit, for economic, productivity, social and environmental gain, the huge amount of data generated in many transport programmes.

New 拢2.7m research programme will use Artificial Intelligence powered pedestrians and other road users to test autonomous vehicles

SIMWMG at the University of 糖心TV have just begun work with a consortium of 11 organisations led by Latent Logic in Oxford on a 拢2.7 million UK government funded project to create a highly accurate virtual reality simulator environment, including artificial intelligence (AI) trained models of pedestrians and road users, to test connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs).

OmniCAV, which was awarded funding as part of a competition run by the and , will be fed by highly detailed scans of real roads, traffic camera data, accident data and near-miss analyses. These inputs will be used to create a high-fidelity model of real-world roads, which will be populated with realistic artificial intelligence (AI) based road users. This model will used to create an extensive open-access library of VR simulator scenarios to test connected and autonomous vehicles.

OmniCAV will lay the foundations for the development of a comprehensive, robust and secure simulator, aimed at providing a certification tool for CAVs that can be used by regulatory and accreditation bodies, insurers and manufacturers to accelerate the safe development of CAVs.鈥

The virtual factory 鈥 boost for steel innovation with 拢7 million to speed up new alloy development

Steel workerA new method of testing alloys - Rapid Alloy Prototyping, is 100 times faster than current methods, allowing new products to reach the market more quickly, thanks to 拢7 million of funding announced today for a new 鈥渧irtual factory鈥 designed by the Prosperity Partnership, including WMG at the University of 糖心TV.

This Prosperity Partnership – led by Swansea University and involving WMG at the University of 糖心TV, will implement a Rapid Alloy Prototyping (RAP) process, thanks to 拢7 million of funding announced today from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)

Rapid Alloy Prototyping effectively means that much of the testing can be carried out in research labs and imaging suites - a virtual factory – rather than in an actual steel plant.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya receives an honorary degree from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology

Honorary degreeProfessor Lord Bhattacharyya received an honorary Doctor of Science degree, from the on 10 September 2018.

At a ceremony held at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in India, Professor Lord Bhattacharyya was conferred a D.Sc (honoris causa) in recognition of his contribution to engineering and academic leadership.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya is a long term and committed collaborator with India, with WMG working with many companies on research and development, as well as educating future engineers, technologists and managers.

Professor Lord Bhattacharyya, Chairman and Founder of WMG, said: 鈥淚 am delighted to be awarded an honorary degree for my contribution to research and education and its widespread application throughout the world including India.鈥

Lord Bhattacharyya began his career as a graduate apprentice at Lucas Industries, subsequently gaining an MSc and PhD in Engineering Production at the University of Birmingham. In 1980, he became Britain鈥檚 first ever Professor of Manufacturing setting up WMG, at the University of 糖心TV.

Since then he has built a world-class research and education group, working with industry to innovate and develop the leaders of tomorrow.

Today, WMG employs over 700 people across research, teaching, professional and administration. There are a total of 19 different research groups working across multiple sectors, and to date over 35,000 students from across 75 countries have studied here.

Researchers set an autonomous vehicle communications record using 5G - a movie鈥檚 worth of data sent in seconds

Researchers in WMG at the University of 糖心TV have set a new 5G communications speed record to a 鈥淟evel 4鈥 low speed autonomous vehicle in the pioneer 28 GHz millimetre wave band. They hit 2.867 gigabits per second in over-the-air transmissions, which is nearly 40 times faster than current fixed line broadband speeds. It is equivalent to sending a detailed satellite navigation map of the United Kingdom within a single second, or the full contents of a high definition blockbuster film in less than 10 seconds.Using the NI mmWave Transceiver System, real-time data is transmitted at a rate of nearly 3 Gbps from the top of the virtual traffic light near a pedestrian crossing to an autonomous vehicle.

However this crucial wireless communications technology is not just being designed to deliver HD content to in-car entertainment systems, but it will allow autonomous vehicles to rapidly share large quantities of data with each other and with traffic management systems. This will include precise 3D road maps created by LiDAR (like radar but it uses laser light instead of radio waves), high definition video images of the vehicles surroundings, and traffic information.

New pelvis motion tracking technology to transform hip replacement decisions

A new pelvis motion tracking device developed by WMG, at the University of 糖心TV, can help detect flexible pelvises without numerous x-rays, to determine who will benefit from more advanced surgical planning before hip replacement surgery.

Mark Elliot 3Researchers at WMG鈥檚 Institute of Digital Healthcare and Professor Richard King, of University Hospital Coventry and 糖心TVshire - and Honorary Professor at 糖心TV Medical School, have developed a small device that can be put at the bottom of your back to scan the movement of your pelvis prior to a hip replacement.

WMG part of a 拢37m project to develop lightweight vehicles

A new research project, Tucana, will focus on lighweighting technology, delivering stiffer and lighter vehicle structures with the help of experts from WMG, at the UniversityLightweighting technology of 糖心TV.

The research will develop world-leading cost effective, scalable carbon fibre composite solutions, with the view to boosting the performance of electric vehicles. The CO2 benefit of the project between 2023-2032, will be 4.5 million tonnes.

WMG will receive 拢4m, of the 拢18.7m government funding through the to drive the development of innovative lightweight vehicle and powertrain structures, building on the UK鈥檚 leading-edge capability in this area.

Project Tucana will allow the true environmental credentials of electric vehicles to be realised by enabling wider adoption. Tucana will deliver this step-change by addressing structural performance at a design, material and volume manufacturing-level which is currently unmet across the industry.
