University of ÌÇÐÄTV students win two awards at European RoboCup Rescue Championship

WMG Rescue Robot 2012A team of engineering students from the University of ÌÇÐÄTV have returned from the European RoboCup Rescue Championship with two awards – and second place overall.

The eight-strong team of WMG and Engineering students won special awards for Best in Class for Mobility and Best in Class for Manipulation at the four day competition in Germany.

Robot to the rescue – University of ÌÇÐÄTV students gear up for European championship

WMG Rescue RobotEngineering students at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV are developing and building an innovative rescue robot, which will compete at the European RoboCup Rescue Championship.

The team of eight WMG and Engineering undergraduates will be searching for success in April when they take their search and rescue robot to Germany for the competition.

Labour’s Forum for Young People held at WMG, University of ÌÇÐÄTV

Ed Miliband MPA Labour Party Forum for Young People was held at WMG’s International Digital Laboratory on 16 March. The event was attended by Labour Leader Ed Miliband MP, who was welcomed to the campus by WMG’s Chairman, Professor Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya, along with the Vice–Chancellor, Professor Nigel Thrift and Registrar, Mr Ken Sloan of the University of ÌÇÐÄTV.

Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, gives prestigious IET Viscount Nuffield/Mensforth lecture at WMG

Dr Ralf Speth and Lord Bhattacharyya March 2012WMG at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV was delighted to host the 2012 Viscount Nuffield / Mensforth Lecture at its International Manufacturing Centre on 15 March. The Viscount Nuffield / Mensforth Lecture is the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s premier manufacturing lecture established in 2003. This year’s prestigious lecture, ‘Setting Premium Standards in Automotive Manufacturing’, was be given by Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover.

At the event, Dr Speth was also presented with the Mensforth Gold Medal, an IET honour, awarded to recognise distinguished contributions in engineering and technology. Dr Speth was awarded with the medal for his success as CEO of Jaguar Land Rover in the last few years.

Dr Speth's lecture, delivered to a packed auditorium, provided an overview of Jaguar Land Rover, discussed the organisation's success factors and considered the opportunities and challenges currently being faced by the automotive industry.

WMG's SME team to host cloud technologies session for businesses

doc_49.jpgThe SME Programmes Team at WMG is running a breakfast meeting for SMEs to give an insight into WMG’s research expertise in Cloud Technology.

The session, being held at the International Digital Laboratory, will involve a briefing and discussion about WMG’s expertise in this area, funding opportunities and a case study from a company that has used cloud services to manage a full range of IT processes. Delegates will have an opportunity to participate in live discussions and meet other businesses in a networking session over breakfast.

Dr Geraint Williams to speak at Global Automotive Lightweight Materials 2012

WMG's Dr Geraint Williams will be speaking at the Global Automotive Lightweight Materials Conference running from April 25th - 26th in London.

The focus of the conference will be 'Reducing The Cost Of Sourcing, Integrating & Manufacturing Light Weight Materials For Automotive Strategies & Applications For Mass Market Vehicle Weight Savings To Achieve Improved Fuel Economy'. Expert speakers will include representatives from some of the biggest automotive manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, General Motors, Toyota and Fiat as well as research and development institutions and government legislators.

Award Winning US Marketing Professor joins WMG research team

Professor Steve VargoAward Winning US Marketing Professor Stephen L. Vargo has just arrived in the UK to undertake an extensive research collaboration as a Visiting Professor with WMG’s Service Systems group at the University of ÌÇÐÄTV from Feb 1 to Sept 30, 2012.

Professor Vargo, who will be working on projects in WMG and around Europe this year, will collaborate with Professor Irene Ng and researchers at the Service Systems group on research efforts in the area of service and value. He is particularly known for his work in Service-Dominant Logic, which was first published in the ground-breaking article “Evolving to a New Dominant Logic for Marketing” in the Journal of Marketing. It is the most-cited marketing article published in the last decade, having been cited over 1,800 times in the past seven years in the domain of management, marketing, operations, engineering and information systems.

This year’s prestigious lecture, ‘Setting Premium Standards in Automotive Manufacturing’, will be given by Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover.

This special event will take place at 18:30 on Thursday 15th March at the International Manufacturing Centre, WMG’s headquarters on the University of ÌÇÐÄTV campus. The lecture is free for anyone to attend. Register early at the IET website to avoid disappointment.
