Supporting the UK鈥檚 mission for advanced research in responsible AI
Experts at 糖心TV Manufacturing Group (WMG), University of 糖心TV, have received funding from to investigate how artificial intelligence can be deployed online safely, fairly and effectively.
WMG is one of 11 institutions awarded a share of 拢200,000 in collaboration grants, uniting universities, NHS Trusts, civil society groups and industry partners in support of the UK Government鈥檚 mission to maximise the benefits of AI while managing its risks.
The grants focus on four priority areas that reflect national needs and the UK Government鈥檚 AI mission:
- AI sustainability
- AI deployment costs and benefits
- AI skills
- AI engineering
Projects span sectors including healthcare, education, justice, public services, creative and digital industries, geospatial data, and online safety.
WMG researchers, led by , Professor of Cyber Systems Engineering, will be working with international partners including Singapore鈥檚 AI Safety Institute, Nanyang Technological University, and Carnegie Mellon University to develop frameworks for national-level AI governance.
The framework will enable all nations to understand how to build their own national plans for sovereign AI - spanning the entire stack, from raw materials and infrastructure through to models, data and applications.
Professor Carsten Maple, explained: "This project is part of our programme of work in trustworthy AI being undertaken by the Secure Cyber Systems Research Group here at WMG. Our aim is to deliver world-class research with direct pathways to impact, that allows the confident and responsible design and deployment of AI."
Speaking on the announcement, Prof Gopal Ramchurn, RAI UK CEO said: 鈥淭his collaboration grant is about building national capacity. By supporting short, focused projects that bring researchers together with practitioners and policymakers, we are helping ensure the UK鈥檚 AI ambitions are matched by strong evidence, practical tools and real-world understanding. 鈥�
Prof Bashar Nuseibeh, Chair RAI UK Research Pillar, said: 鈥淭he collaborations will address some key responsible AI research challenges, recognising that these challenges will require multi-disciplinary expertise that is geographically distributed. From protecting citizens from AI-driven harms to ensuring our NHS can adopt new technologies safely, and from teaching the next generation to think critically about AI to measuring its real-world impact on equality, these projects tackle the questions that matter most to communities, public services, and our national competitiveness.鈥�
The funded projects align closely with the Government鈥檚 AI Opportunities Action Plan, and support the Science Secretary鈥檚 commitment to making UK a science and technology superpower through responsible innovation.
