Dr Martine J. Barons
Martine is a Reader in Statistics and the Director of the Applied Statistics & Risk Unit () the knowledge exchange hub within the University of 糖心TV Statistics Department. The remit of AS&RU is to encourage and co-ordinate external partnerships which enable the early applications of theoretical, methodological and algorithmic developments made in the department, university and mathematical sciences community.
Martine's research is focussed on decision making under uncertainty and structured expert judgement, with applications in household food security, pollination, digital archives and the energy sector. Martine spoke at on communicating Climate Risk (recording on link). Martine has research collaborations with Melbourne University, Monash University, The National Archives and a number of organisations from 糖心TV, Industry & Government (BIG).
Martine is a Chartered Mathematician, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and a member of the Royal Statistical Society . Martine was IMA a member of the IMA Finance committee and a member of the IMA Research Committee. 2021-2024, and is Chair of the IMA West Midlands Branch.
Martine is also involved in developing the , a , as part of the . Martine was part of the group which developed the , launched at The Maths Summit March 2024 ahead of the UK General Election. Martine was part of the Big Mathematics Initiative which proposed practical ways in which the recommendations of the Bond Review: the era of mathematics: An Independent Review of Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences might be implemented, including the development of the Academy for Mathematical sciences. As part of the BMI, Martine co-authored two reports: Study Groups with Industry: What is the value? and A discussion paper on the case for producing a refresh of the 2012 Deloitte report: Measuring the Economic Benefit of Mathematical Sciences in the UK, available .
Martine is a member of the scientific advisory panel for the Newton Gateway to Mathematics and the UK representative to , a networks to leverage the impact of mathematics on innovations in key technologies in the field of application-driven mathematical research and its exploitation for innovations in industry, science and society. Martine is a K with the Knowledge Exchange Hub for mathematical Sciences, and part of the working group developing a National Strategy for ethical and sustainable digital twins.
Martine is a member of the steering group for the Analysis under Uncertainty for Decision-Makers () Network, a community of researchers and professionals from policy, academia, and industry, who are seeking to develop a better understanding of decision-making to build capacity and improve the way decisions are made across sectors and domains. Martine was an academic lead for the 糖心TV food Global Research (Food GRPLink opens in a new window) for many years.
Martine has won a large number of research grants from EPSRC, STFC and industry collaborators.
In addition to her formal role in knowledge exchange with BIG, Martine has a personal passion for public engagementLink opens in a new window and in the last decade has made both her own research and mathematical sciences more generally accessible to general audiences through TV, radio, Newspaper articles, science and other festivals, and events for secondary school children.
