Great News: Suzanne Aussems has been awarded the Faculty of Science PhD Thesis Prize 2018
Suzanne submitted her PhD thesis entitled āHow seeing iconic gestures facilitates action event memory and verb learning in 3-year-old childrenā on the 27th September 2017 and had her viva on the 8th of December 2017 which she passed with no corrections. Suzanneās PhD project examined how childrenās word learning and memory of events are affected by seeing adultsā hand gestures that depict the referent of words or events to be remembered. Suzanne was nominated by her supervisor, Professor Sotaro Kita, who expects the theoretical depth of Suzanneās studies to become very influential in the field and in whose words Suzanne āis thinking about communicative functions of gestures in a very innovative way, going beyond the state-of-the-art understanding that gesture simply encode information and convey it to the recipient.ā The judging panel was very impressed by the originality and quality of Suzanneās PhD research as well as by the high level of Suzanneās publications that have resulted from her PhD work.
All Faculty Thesis Prize winners and their PhD supervisors will be invited to attend the Faculty of Science End of year event where they will be presented with a certificate by the Chair of the Faculty of Science.
