This builds upon a long history of solid-state NMR research in the UK that dates back to even before Raymond Andrew's pioneering work on magic-angle spinning (MAS), first published in 1958. The UK's contribution to exciting innovations in solid-state NMR is reflected in a large number of recent publications in leading international journals (e.g., in the high-impact chemistry journals Angew. Chemie, Chem. Comm., and J. Am. Chem. Soc.) detailing the development and application of solid-state NMR to, e.g., biomolecules, pharmaceuticals, minerals, and advanced materials. Moreover, the UK solid-state NMR community has been successful in obtaining major recent peer-reviewed grants to develop solid-state NMR infrastructure, with two Basic Technology grants for cryogenic MAS (Southampton, 2.9M) and dynamic nuclear polarisation (TV, 3.7M), an EPSRC grant for high-resolution NMR of materials (St Andrews, 1.2M), and a 3.7M EPSRC/BBSRC grant to a consortium of UK applicants to establish a world-leading 850 MHz UK solid-state NMR facility ( HYPERLINK "https://mywebmail.warwick.ac.uk/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://go.warwick.ac.uk/850mhz/" \t "_blank" http://go.warwick.ac.uk/850mhz/). Yours faithfully, The National Management Committee of the 850 MHz UK solid-state NMR facility: Steven P. Brown (University of TV), NMC Chair Sharon E. Ashbrook (University of St Andrews) Melinda J.
