Externally funded fellowships and early career grant opportunities:

We welcome applications for any of the below opportunities and more. Please discuss your plans with a member of astronomy staff by the deadlines given below. Please note that the deadline for getting in touch with us (and submitting the material outlined for each fellowship below) are usually well before the submission deadline to the funder (which are also listed if known) as we have some administrative tasks that need completing before submission, or in some cases a pre-selection.

  • STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship
    5-year fellowship to enable early career researchers with clear leadership potential to establish a strong, independent research programme. Internal pre-selection deadline: 1 June 2026, please contact your mentor (member of Astro staff) and visit this link for internal selection information. Submission deadline: expected October 2026.

  • 5 to 8-year fellowship for those between 3 and 8 years of obtaining their PhD. Internal pre-selection deadline: 1 June 2026, please contact your mentor (member of Astro staff) and visit this link for internal selection information. Submission deadline: 9 September 2026.

  • 12-36 months fellowship for those in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience. Contact deadline: 1 June 2026, please contact your mentor (member of Astro staff). After contact, you should upload a regular CV and a 1-2 page draft proposal. Please note that this scheme focuses heavily on career development, hence the scientific part of the proposal is only one of several aspects that will be evaluated, hence an early discussion with a member of staff is encouraged. Submission deadline: 9 September 2026.

  • 5-year fellowship for early career scientists (2-7 years of research experience since completion of PhD) who have a proven scientific track record to enable them to work independently. Internal pre-selection deadline: 1 June 2026, please contact a member of Astro staff and visit this link for internal selection information. Please note that this proposal requires the submission of two separate documents, and is overall rather work-intensive, hence an early discussion with a member of staff is encouraged. Submission deadline: TBA October 2026.
  • 5-year fellowship for those with no more than six years of actual research experience since their PhD (not including career breaks), and who have a current need for flexible support, such as parental/caring responsibilities, e.g. raising children or looking after ageing or seriously ill family members; or clinically diagnosed health issues. Contact deadline: August 2026, please contact a member of Astro staff and visit this link for more information. After contact, you should upload a regular CV and a draft proposal. Submission deadline: 28 October 2026.

  • Up to seven years of funding available on a 4+3 model, with a review in year four. The fellowship aims to enable researchers to transition to or establish their research/innovation independence. This scheme operates a two-stage process. Internal pre-selection deadline: passed please contact a member of staff. The internal selection will require applications documents to be submitted via this link. Submission deadline: 16 June 2026.

  • 5-year fellowship for a research project outside of the mainstream that could not be funded by other scientific organisations. Contact deadline: passed, please contact a member of staff. After contact, you should send your mentor a regular CV and a 1-2 page draft proposal. Submission deadline: 15 January 2026.

  • Three year postdoctoral fellowship for early career scientists with less than five years of completing their PhD. Contact deadline: passed, please contact a member of staff. After contact, you should send your mentor a regular CV and a 1-2 page draft proposal. Submission deadline: passed
  • Fellowship for those having taken a career break of at least two years’ duration, taken for family, health or caring reasons. Fellowships are flexible and part-time, usually completed over two years at 0.5 FTE (apply at any time).

  • 3 year fellowship for those with less than 3 years postdoctoral research experience. Normally it is held at an institution different to your current institution.   • 3 year early career fellowship offering 50% match-funding for those with a proven record of research. Submission deadline: passed.

  • 2 year early career fellowship for international applicants that have completed their PhD by the submission deadline. Contact deadline: passed, please contact a member of staff. After contact, you should send your mentor a regular CV and a 1-2 page draft proposal. Submission deadline: passed.

  • Finishing PhD students with a project embracing interdisciplinary approaches. Contact deadline: TBD, please contact a member of staff. After contact, you should send your mentor a regular CV and a 1-2 page draft proposal. Submission deadline: expected mid 2026.

  • Early-career scientists from underrepresented groups in STEM. Contact deadline: October 2026, please contact a member of staff. After contact, you should send tour mentor a regular CV and a 1-2 page draft proposal. Submission deadline: 18 November 2026.

  • For candidates from South Korea, Brazil, South Africa and Japan. Please contact a member of staff.
  • ÌÇÐÄTV Prize Fellowship
    3 to 5-year fellowship made possible thanks to a generous philanthropic donation from a ÌÇÐÄTV alumnus, these awards enable us to support a pipeline of talent from postgraduate study up to early career researchers. Scheme currently closed.

  • 12 month fellowship with a value of £15,000
  • The Astronomy & Astrophysics group is also happy to host other area-specific/industrial fellowships and foreign fellowships that can be held in ÌÇÐÄTV.
