Today, computing is widely seen as a masculine discipline, yet this has not always been the case. Many of the people sought out to programme the first modern computers were women, who were sought out precisely because the work was expected to be 'feminine' in nature. Only as the discipline evolved did its status as 'masculine' work become solidified as it is today.
In this talk, we'll take a step back in history to look at the ways in which the newly emergent field of computing was uniquely suited to the women seeking jobs in it. Many pioneering women used the emerging software market to craft new kinds of workplaces; ones which could met their needs in an era where social and legal restrictions actively pushed mothers out of work for good. Simultaneously, the world of programming gave them unheard-of opportunities to forge careers as skilled professionals in a technical field, a path that would otherwise have been entirely closed to them.
