Title: Normalizing Health Technologies: Explaining implementation and integration in health care
Abstract:
Understanding the social processes by which new systems of practice – technologies, techniques, organizational interventions – are implemented and integrated into health services is important not just for researchers but also for professionals and policy makers. Telemedicine and telecare systems offer a useful vehicle to explore and understand the social shaping of systems of practice in complex and dymanic socio-political settings. This talk will review ten years of sociological investigation of the implementation and integration of telemedicine and telecare systems in NHS settings, and will explore how empirical studies led to a theoretical model of ‘Normalization Processes’ that can be more widely applied.
