'We take in fuel, burn it with oxygen, do work (some of us...), and radiate heat.聽 I will argue that the resemblance聽to a heat engine is at best unhelpful, at worst grossly misleading, reinforcing a belief in physics as The Fundamental Science.聽 Such "thin-causality"聽explanations are preferred for nursery stories, for聽Lies-to-Children, even for undergraduate exam questions and answers.聽聽 But "thick-causality" thinking, including historical and contingent elements and recognition of complexity, is mandatory for better understanding of biological processes; this is especially so for reproduction and development.'
