Title: Statistical physics of collective motion
Abstract: Active particles are able to extract and dissipate energy from their surroundings to produce systematic and coherent motion. Collections of locally interacting active particles describe the far-from-equilibrium collective motion observed in active matter systems as diverse as vertebrate groups (bird flocks, fish schools, mammal herds, etc.), insects swarms, colonies of bacteria, motility assays, as well as driven granular matter. The wide range of scales involved, as well as the robustness with respect to system details of the collective properties suggests that many properties of these systems can be described by a limited number of universality classes. In this seminar, I will show how active matter systems can be classified according to their symmetries and conservations laws, and discuss their most striking properties through the use of both simple microscopic dynamics and hydrodynamic, continuum level, theories.
