We explain the status and the validity of entropy production principles to characterize nonequilibrium behaviour.\'a0 In particular, we concentrate on the minimum and maximum entropy production principles and we connect them to the large deviation properties of stochastic dynamical systems.\'a0 We also discuss the connection with so called McLennan ensembles and we discuss some open problems related to the regime of close-to-equilibrium as function of the size of the system.}
