Caryn Bern (University of California, San Francisco) "Public Talk: Fixing houses to fight Chagas Disease"OC0.03, Main CampusChagas disease is a neglected tropical disease estimated to affect 5.7 million people in Latin America and result in 8000 deaths annually. It is caused by a parasite transmitted to humans by a large bloodsucking insect called a triatomine, which lives in the walls and roofs of rural mudbrick houses. Our current project is in southern Bolivia, and in the villages where we work more than half the people are infected with the parasite and about a third develop potentially fatal Chagas heart disease. We’re using traditional building techniques to improve houses in these villages to reduce places for the insects to hide and ultimately prevent children being infected in the first place. Come along to this interactive and visual talk to learn about Chagas disease and how we can combat it by fixing houses! The event will start with light refreshments and drinks at 6pm outside the OC0.03 lecture theatre to give a chance to meet and chat with Caryn, and the talk will start around 6:30pm.
