TIA Centre Spotlight: Ethar Alzaid
My career journey
With extended experience in higher education as a lecturer in the Computer Science Department at the University of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, I built a strong foundation in computer science along with a growing interest in applying it beyond the classroom. That's where my fascination with AI for medical applications took hold, especially the potential for machine learning to meaningfully support clinical decision-making, and that fascination is what pushed me toward research. Joining the TIA Centre followed naturally, as I was drawn by how inspiring and impactful its focus in this space is.
My current work
My current research focuses on survival risk prediction and stratification, using computational methods to identify robust patient risk groups from complex biomedical data. Notable projects include work on automatically discovering robust risk groups from limited survival data across biomedical modalities, using large multimodal models to standardise pathology reports and assess their prognostic significance, and developing , a method for learning directed population transitions from cross-sectional biomedical data using optimal transport.
My hobbies and interests
Outside of research, I enjoy drawing a lot!
