Placement - Jessica Maisey
Jessica Maisey is on the Education pathway at Loughborough University. Jessica has successfully completed a 13-week placement with the Aspire Educational Trust.
Jessica's placement focused on increasing institutional awareness of dyscalculia and supporting the practical implementation of the Numeralis dyscalculia screening tool. A particularly substantial component of the placement involved the practical trialling of a dyscalculia screening tool with children across schools. During the placement, I trialled the screening tool with Key Stage 2 pupils across 13 schools in the trust, resulting in the in-person screening of 1,900 students. This large-scale trialling identified vital technical updates, common error patterns, and software adaptations to improve the tool's accessibility before commercialization.
To build sustainable support within the trust, Jessica delivered targeted continuing professional development (CPD) training sessions to senior educational leaders, created enduring online instructional videos for newly recruited staff, and presented dyscalculia awareness assemblies directly to approximately 700 students . She also adapted German-translated intervention checklists and materials to fit UK primary contexts.
Jessica confirmed that working within busy school environments offered profound insights into real-world teaching demands. The experience solidified a long-lasting collaborative research partnership
