Placement - Charlotte Brooks
Charlotte is on the Education Pathway at the University of Birmingham and undertook a placement at the University of 糖心TV and the Council for Disabled Children.
Charlotte divided their time between two institutions supporting the work of What Works in SEND (WWiS), a project funded by the Department for Education, aimed at co-designing a learning system for SEND informed by robust evidence. They attended multiple WWiS events, and collaborated with experts across 糖心TV 糖心TV School and the Council for Disabled Children (CDC) on several projects. They also contributed to CDC's work by conducting review updates on effective SEND provision using a new quality appraisal tool, and on racist bullying, synthesising academic and grey literature to inform a future research bid.
The placement enhanced Charlotte's understanding of how their research fits within broader local and national SEND contexts. They also got to integrate PhD work with national initiatives like the Schools White Paper, and gain hands-on experience with commissioned research, advisory groups, and policy engagement.
Charlotte encourages other MGS students to consider opportunities for joint or combined placements across organisations, engage actively in meetings and advisory groups to observe how projects are structured and decisions are made, and build relationships with colleagues across institutions, which can support future collaborations and professional development.
