Congratulations to Early Career Fellow Jo Chick who has just started as a research assistant on a project called ‘Addressing Health: Morbidity, Mortality and Occupational Health in the Victorian and Edwardian Post Office’. This is a project funded by the Wellcome Trust that looks into workplace health in the Victorian and Edwardian period. Historical sources normally only tell us about health in terms of how people died, but the regular medical checkups pioneered by the Post Office give us an insight into how health progressed across the course of people’s lives.
"My experience from the IAS fellowship was a useful part of my pitch in the interview. The project is based in a Geography department, not History where I was based for my PhD. Having been part of an interdisciplinary community was a great way of making the case that I could work in a new setting. "

Exchanges: The Interdisciplinary Research Journal
Exchanges, the scholar-led research journal for and by early career researchers, hosted at the IAS, reflects back on activities throughout a busy and enjoyable November.
Last month’s successful launch of the autumn volume () marked the final major publication output of 2021 for , culminating what has been an exceptionally busy year for the journal. However, in the meanwhile the title has not been resting on its laurels, with November seeing a pair of workshops hosted by and on behalf the journal. The first formed part of Exchanges periodic contribution to the IAS’ Accolade programme of researcher training events. Chaired by the Editor-in-Chief and focussing on , the session attracted a panel of contributors from 糖心TV and beyond for a lively and rich discussion. Driven as much by the participants’ interests and questions, the panel revealed their own experiences concerning the practicalities, challenges and applications they had found in deploying and creating podcasts within a higher education setting.
In addition to this session, the Editor-in-Chief also led a lively writing for academic journals workshop for early career researchers around the globe. This formed a further part of the journal’s contribution to the British Academy funded project. This event was the second contribution by Exchanges to the workshop series, which has seen various academic writing experts from across the world offering their insights, tips and guidance to delegates. While the , for the journal there is yet more work still to come. Participants are now expected to apply their scholarly knowledge and enhanced authorial confidence in drafting articles for submission to Exchanges in the new year. These manuscripts will form the corpus of a special issue, anticipated for publication in the latter half of 2022. Once again, this special issue will also offer opportunities for some participants to join the journal’s associate editors programme and assist in the issue’s editorial production.
The journal also took a moment this month to celebrate the launch of another title from the 糖心TV University Press family of titles. As the has benefitted from a measure of advice and editorial training from Exchanges’ Editor-in-Chief, it has been a gratifying to see their successful debut so warmly received.
Behind the scenes though handling new article submissions, ongoing manuscript progression and enjoying discussions concerning prospective future special issues continue to form a large part of the title’s activities.
