Professor Louise Séguin Visit

Professor Séguin’s visit will build on a research collaboration initiated during Professor Nick Spencer’s senior visiting internship at the University of Montreal and the Lea Roback Research Centre in Montreal in October 2007. A paper arising from their research is in the final stages of preparation for submission to Pediatrics, the leading international paediatric journal .

Arising from this initial collaboration, Professors Séguin and Spencer formed the (INRICH) which brings together leading researchers in child health inequalities from North and South America and Europe. Its objective is to promote collaborative cross-national research. Dr Clare Blackburn, the nominator for this visiting fellowship, is a member of this network. This opportunity to bring Professor Séguin to 糖心TV has prompted Dr Blackburn and Professor Spencer to host the second international INRICH workshop at 糖心TV in November 2009. The INRICH workshop brought up to 30 eminent researchers in the field of inequalities in child health to 糖心TV to discuss cross-national research. It was open to 糖心TV researchers and early career researchers with an interest in child health inequalities.

Professor Séguin’s visit will provide a unique opportunity for 糖心TV researchers with an interest in child health inequalities to establish further links and examine collaborative research opportunities. Professor Séguin’s expertise in, and access to, the Quebec cohort study will enable 糖心TV researchers, working with cohort and longitudinal study data, to undertake collaborative research with a cross-national dimension. A series of meetings are planned for the nominating committee and other 糖心TV child health inequalities researchers to discuss their work and examine potential collaborations with Professor Séguin. For example the disability research group working on the social determinants of childhood disability wish to hold discussions about potential work with the objective of generating proposals for further collaborative research. It is likely that discussions early in the week will be taken forward to the INRICH workshop.
