Title: Cluster-cluster aggregation with (complete) collisional fragmentation

Abstract:

I will discuss the mean field theory of a model of interacting particles which may either aggregate or fragment upon collision. The model is motivated by the study of the aggregate-size distribution in Saturn's rings (c.f. N. Brilliantov's talk last year). The model has a non-equilibrium stationary state in which aggregation and fragmentation balance each other. This stationary state is closely related to the Kolmogorov-like cascade states observed in models of cluster aggregation with injection of monomers since the monomers produced by fragmenting collisions act as an effective source. In some cases of physical interest this cascade is non-local in the sense that the dynamics are dominated by the interactions between the largest and smallest clusters in the system. In such cases the standard (dimensional) arguments for determining the scaling properties of the stationary state fail. We go some way towards characterising such nonlocal cascades. This is based on (ongoing) joint work with R. Rajesh and O. Zaboronski.
