Title:  What am I? Finding Communities in Networks Using Line Graphs

Abstract:

Communities in complex networks - tightly knit subgraphs - are large scale structures which emerge as a network is created. I will look at some of the ways these can be found and discuss how one might quantify what is a `good' community structure e.g. using ideas from Information Theory.  I will then focus on overlapping communities - a cover on the set of vertices - rather than associating each vertex to a unique partition as is usually considered.  I will discuss a new wayof doing this using Line Graphs.  I will use simple examples to illustrate the points but will also refer to applications in large networks.  In particular, can I use data on published papers to find out if I'm a Theoretical Physicist or an Applied Mathematician?
