Title: Metal CompMetal Complexity in Biology and Medicinelexity in Biology and Medicine

Abstract:

There are 81 stable elements on earth. How does the human genome code for the elements which are essential for life? To a coordination chemist, the code for an essential metal is also a code for its ligands, for a metal complex (metal plus ligands). A metal complex can contain 2-10 ligands in various coordination geometries, with various thermodynamic binding strengths and ligand exchange rates (10-8 to 1010 s-1). Both essential and non-essential elements can be used in therapy, even radioactive ones. I will illustrate our attempts to control both the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of metal complexes and design novel anticancer agents. A major challenge for understanding the chemistry of life and for the discovery of new therapies for intractable diseases lies in unraveling the complexity of the chemistry of metals.
