TITLE: Complex case based patterns: A response to the methodological challenge of studying complex social systems

SPEAKER: Emma Uprichard (York)

ABSTRACT:

The methodological challenge to studying complex social systems has been noted by a number of researchers over the past decade working in a range of disciplines. So far, the focus has remained on improving our methods or models in order to better capture the multiple and complex dynamics intrinsic to complex systems. Whilst many of these attempts have proved interesting and useful, they tend to remain problematic, if only because of the immense methodological challenge that is also notoriously present when studying complex systems in general and complex social systems in particular. This paper proposes that one way round this methodological challenge is to focus on 'case based patterns'. Here, our range of methodological approaches remain important and valid, but they are extended to build up representations of the particular 'patterns of change' that are specific to particular cases. The paper discusses what a complex case based pattern approach might involve and what the weaknesses and strengths that such an approach might entail.
