Title: Dynamic combinatorial chemistry: adventures in thermodynamically controlled molecular networks
Abstract: The study of complex mixtures of interacting molecules lies at the heart of the booming field of systems biology. Chemists have been slow to respond to this development. Yet the study of mixtures of synthetic molecules provides a unique bottom-up approach that complements current research in systems biology. The sheer complexity combined with the fragility of biological networks (knocking out biological pathways often results in the collapse of the entire system / organism) represent huge challenges to any experimental approach of the subject. Approaching complex molecular networks from a chemical background avoids these limitations and may lead to new insights in how properties can emerge from a complex system. Dynamic combinatorial libraries provide an ideal entry into this area, representing networks in which molecules are linked through a set of equilibria. I will show how such systems can process and transmit molecular information.
