Two-phase flow at pore-scale: experimental data dispersion and validation challenges for numerical simulation performance

With the ultimate aim of understanding and better quantifying the production capacity of an oil reservoir, experiments are performed on cores, in a physical Lab, to assess the “flow potential” of the reservoir porous rock of interest. This well established “Core Analysis” approach provides a range of macroscopic properties like the permeability of the fluid (or fluids) involved.

In this talk I will discuss the possibility of integrating such conventional Lab activities with a simulation technology in a “Digital Rock Lab”. After an introduction, I will focus in particular on the science of two-phase flow at pore-scale and discuss the challenges in this field particularly in numerical simulation. I will finally focus on the aspect of physical validation of simulators: in this talk the emphasis is on a statistical analysis of the repeatability of the experiments that serve as a validation dataset.

- NB: This event is hosted jointly by the Complexity Forum and Applied Mathematics.
