Title: Mitochondrial variability

Abstract: Mitochondria are the power stations of the cell. As such variability in this population seems likely to have physiological implications. I will discuss how mathematical tools developed for studying chemical species can be used to make progress in the study of populations of mitochondria and touch on implications for three parent babies and evidence for evolution within our lifetimes and within our organs. I'll also outline experiment and theory on how mitochondrial variation might connect to cell fate variability. If I have time I'll discuss the mystery of why mitochondria often fuse and form cell-spanning networks.
