About: What do we remember from television’s past? In this talk, Andrew Burke examines the grip that the parts beyond the programming – from public service announcements to station identifications to sign-off sequences – have on cultural memory. Drawing specifically on the history of Canadian television, this paper explores the connections between nation and nostalgia, affect and archive. How might a new category, the paratelevisual, help us understand the ways in which these half-remembered elements of television’s past continue to haunt and fascinate us?
