Inaugural Meeting of the Non-Human Reading Group'
The Non-Human Reading Group aims to provide an informal setting to bring together staff and postgraduates working on different aspects of the non-human, the in-human, or the post-human across the Humanities and Social Sciences departments. Our goal is to read and discuss texts from different fields in order to open up a dialogue about what is at stake in taking into account the non-human (animal, plant or material object) when writing our traditionally human-focused narratives. In particular, we want to critically assess the politics implicit in various anti-, post- and humanist accounts of non-human forms of being.
The group will consist of bi-termly meetings during which one member will hold a very short presentation on a pre-circulated text from his or her own discipline that they either want help with or think should be discussed outside of their own immediate field.
For a first meeting, we will be reading Neil Badmington's article 'Post, Oblique, Human' (Theology & Sexuality 10.2 (2004) 56-64), presented by Hanna Schumacher (German Department).
For further information, for a PDF of the article and/or to be included on the mailing list (even if you can't make it to the first meeting!), please contact Elisabeth Wallmann (e.wallmann@warwick.ac.uk).
