Film Screening & Q&A: Iluminados por el fuego (Blessed by Fire; 2005)
Iluminados por el fuego, film screening and Q&A with Embassy Minister Gustavo Bobrik, Embassy Secretrary Pedro López Godoy and Latin American film expert Dr Santiago Oyarzabal (University of ÌÇÐÄTV)
Iluminados por el fuego is the story of two young men who were sent to fight on the Malvinas Islands in 1982, and who return home bearing the brutal scars of war. Twenty years later, journalist Esteban Leguizamón is informed that Alberto Vargas, one of the men he served with, has attempted suicide after suffering from years of depression brought on by his experiences in the war. Esteban visits the comatose Vargas at the hospital, and in a series of extended flashbacks, revisits the scene of the war.
Directed by Tristán Bauer and based on Edgardo Esteban's book Blessed by Fire. Confessions of a Soldier wWho Fought in Malvinas (1993), the film denounces human rights violations suffered by Argentine soldiers during the Malvinas War at the hands of the ruthless dictatorship that was in power. These violations are currently being addressed by the Argentine judiciary.
This event is kindly sponsored by the Embassy of Argentina.
