Sidelights on Shakespeare - Professor Ewan FernieH0.44Professor Ewan Fernie (The Shakespeare Institute) ‘Why Celebrate Shakespeare?’ Since Garrick's 1769 Jubilee in Stratford-upon-Avon, the work of William Shakespeare has been continuously honoured. Professor Fernie's paper will explore the civic and political possibilities of such celebrations, connecting Garrick's Jubilee with the Shakespeare festivals of the past year as well as with the upcoming events set to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. |
