About: How does cinema archive a history of objects? 鈥淐inema and the Object World of Modernity鈥 is a project that examines the history of postwar modernization by treating film from the 1960s and 70s as an audio-visual archive of industrial and graphic design. From Tetra Paks to Bialetti moka pots, films from this period tell the history of the transformation of everyday life and the emergence of globalized logistical networks through the things that populate cinematic space. In this talk, Andrew Burke explores how the ordinary objects that appear onscreen, often incidentally or deep in the background, might provide a new way to understand the history of the present.
