'Effective teaching and valid evaluation of medical student global health rotations: new techniques'
Brief synopsis: Medical student global health rotations, mainly in developing countries, have become so much a part of the undergraduate curriculum that one quarter to one third of US students now do rotations outside the US. There schools in Australia where almost all students do international rotations and one Israeli school where a global health rotation is required. Difficult practical educational challenges faced when implementing GH rotations are frequently not met. The main teaching problem in these rotations is how to maintain a high standard of instruction when students are so widely spread out geographically. The main evaluation problem is how to assess central educational objectives that are attitudinal, such as increased cultural sensitivity. I will discuss how standardizing the curriculum internationally and social networking may be used to improve the standard of instruction, while content analysis of reflection papers can be used to evaluate attitudinal change."
