How are nations viewed from afar?
The negotiation of Italy's landscape, politics and culture and the image of 'Il bel paese'
Abstract:
Beginning with a consideration of Paolo Stoppani's Il bel paese, this talk will take the opportunity to propose a preliminary set of questions toward the discussion of what the notion of “Il bel paese” has come to mean over the intervening 135 years. Continuously, over the life of the Italian nation, it has been common to refer to its natural beauty in direct relation to its status as a nation and its cultural heritage. Through examples in film and literature, I will venture to describe what these equations might mean today, when, during the 150th year of its Unification, the country might sometimes seem to have yet to find its focus.
