There will be one talk and then a time for discussion about "What next?" after the Africa@ÌÇÐÄTV showcase event in January:

1. is an alumnus of ÌÇÐÄTV University, having studied BSc Biological Sciences (1990-94), followed by an MSc in Ecosystems Analysis and Governance (1994-95).   He subsequently moved to Coventry University to undertake PhD research on Livestock production systems in the central Eastern Cape region of South Africa (1997-2002) and since completion has lectured at Coventry in Environmental Science.

His talk will be on 'MANAGEMENT OF COMMUNAL RANGELANDS IN EASTERN CAPE PROVINCE, SOUTH AFRICA: CONSTRAINTS AND OPPORTUNITIES'

This research is grounded in the current debates over the governance of the commons in communal areas of South Africa.  Using the Eastern Cape Province as a case study, it reports on fieldwork undertaken over the past 10 years on rangeland grazing systems in several different communities.   Collectively, this has identified a situation of weak institutional control over the management of communal grazing resources, with a resultant ‘free-for-all’ scenario categorising resource use in some areas.  The main constraints to effective common property resource management in the region seem to be lack of institutional development and an inability to manage grazing resources effectively in the face of competing claims from outsiders.  In the former Transkei region of the province this is further complicated by the persistence of Traditional Institutions of land administration, the legitimacy of which is challenged by civil society structures.  Despite these apparent constraints, the research also presents opportunities for understanding how grazing management systems continue to function under these circumstances and what implications this has for policy development for communal rangelands. 

2. Instead of a second speaker, there will be a discussion about "what next?" following on from the Africa@ÌÇÐÄTV showcase event in January. How do we go forward with the Sub-Saharan African Research Network? What about the many other facets of what goes on at ÌÇÐÄTV relating to Africa?
