Visiting Fellow Prof Klaus Kern "The Small Frontier: Building and Probing the Nanoworld Atom-by-Atom"
Nanoscience, the probing and manipulation of matter at the atomic scale, takes us to the quantum world, where the properties of materials are dramatically different. The “small frontier” is demanding new tools and new understanding, but it may hold the key to a second industrial revolution. The aim is to gain control of materials at the atomic and molecular level, allowing us to design materials and devices with properties and functionalities tailored to specific needs. The success of this endeavor will allow the fundamental discoveries of nanoscience to find wide application. Nanostructures are recognized to be the key components of future communications, printing, computing, chemical sensing and energy storage and conversion technologies. At the interface to biology the new field of nano-biotechnology is developing with brilliant prospects for life science and health care.
