Secondary Students

Now that you鈥檝e had a look through the stories, it鈥檚 time for you to get involved- we have 3 competitions and 10 prizes up for grabs- why not have a go by yourself or in a group!

Note: With participant's permission, the work of some or all entrants will be showcased on our website. The copyright of each piece of work will remain with the participant. The School of Modern Languages and Cultures will have the right in perpetuity to publish the work.

PICTURE PERFECT

Select one of the stories from the booklet. Illustrate the story and write up to 100 words explaining what inspired your picture.

EXTEND THE STORY

Select one of the stories from the booklet and imagine what happens next. Write 300 words if you鈥檙e completing the task in English, but if you鈥檙e up for a challenge, try and write 200 words in your target language (KS4) or 300 words (KS5)!

HAVE YOUR SAY

Select one of the stories from the booklet. What picture does it give the readers of life in another country?

Imagine you are writing a review of 150-200 words for a blog / online magazine.

 

If you鈥檙e in KS3, cover the following points in your review:

  • Does the story tell us about new experiences?
  • Does it make these exciting / interesting? How?
  • Does the writer use their imagination to make the story interesting? How?
  • What kinds of readers would like this story?

If you鈥檙e in KS4-5, cover these points:

  • What does the story tell us about the experience of being in another country and culture?
  • Is the story seeking to teach us a lesson / make us think? How does it do this? Is it successful?
  • How successful is the story in creating a sense of atmosphere?
  • How successful is the story in creating a sense of place?
