Peace Making and MFL Poetry Writing

Peace Making and MFL Poetry Writing

In 2025 we linked the Mother Tongue Other Tongue poetry competition with our Languages for Peace and Reconciliation project. There is such a natural fit between languages and this theme that we were excited to see what pupils would produce. We were not disappointed!

The topic of Peace and Reconciliation is one that links readily with other subjects on the curriculum at primary and secondary level: PSHE, RE and History in particular. Having done some research on other peace and reconciliation materials for schools, we have put together an interactive PowerPoint intended to help you explore these connections with your students.

Being creative peacemakers!

We have also created some 'poem building' ideas in French and Spanish to help beginner learners.

Translation

My heart speaks some languages

It feels a bit sad, as my home is far away,

It feels a bit happy, as my family is with me.

My feelings are now in different words.

My heart speaks some languages,

No major, no minor

One language you speak with your mum

And the other with your friend and a teacher.

My heart speaks some languages,

No matter where you are,

What really matters 鈥 people around you.

No matter what colour the sky is, if everyone smiles to you.

Explanation

This poem is based on the repetition 鈥楳y heart speaks some languages鈥. I wrote this poem because I moved to a new place, and I started speaking a new language here. I still speak my home language with my parents, and a different one with my friends, teachers and neighbours. I am learning one more new language. In my poem I wanted to show that it鈥檚 okay to be different. People who come from different places and speak different languages can be friends. It doesn鈥檛 matter what language you speak or where you come from, what matters is being kind to each other. One of my favourite book characters is Paddington Bear. He said: 鈥楨veryone is different and it means anyone can fit in.鈥 I think this works for me too.
